On May 20, 2014, at approximately 10:50 a.m., officers responded to the area of the 1200 block of Branch Lane for a report of possible human remains in water behind location.
The witness stated that at approximately 10:00 a.m. he was in his backyard doing maintenance when he noticed what he thought was an animal carcass stuck in debris of the creek. The witness then dislodged what he believed to be a carcass to a downstream point. The victim then realized what he had believed to be an animal carcass to be human remains. The witness then contacted the police when he realized it was human remains.
The body was in a significant state of decomposition. The Criminal Investigations Division responded to assist with the investigation. Search dogs from Chesapeake Search Dogs and the Police Academy Recruit Officers responded to assist in the search for evidence.
The remains were released to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be performed to determine cause and manner of death. The identity and gender of the person has not yet been determined.
