Ecosystem Services Program Intern

Department: Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering

    

Duties: Assist staff in processing and analysis if water chemistry and stream flow data including determining Event Mean Concentrations (EMCs), calculating pollutant loading for storm events, processing rainfall and flow data collected by automated sampling equipment, and data entry associated with the County’s Surface Water Monitoring Program.  Assist staff in field activities associated with the collection of water samples, stream flow measurements using current meters, and collection of storm event samples from automated sampling stations.  Assist staff with special projects by performing research on various technical topics related to water quality and riparian habitat conditions.
   

Qualifications: The ideal candidate would be pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental or Water Resources-related Engineering, or a related field of physical science; and possess an appreciation for quantitative data analyses.  Microsoft Office experience  (Word, Excel, and Access) is preferred. GIS skills in Arc GIS environment are a plus. Interest and ability to perform field work is requested. On occasion the intern will work in the field to assist in water quality sample collection, stream cross-section measurement, and stream velocity measurement in the County’s non-tidal and wadable streams. This internship will provide the student with valuable on-the-job experience in the field of natural resource assessment and management.
