Anne Arundel County Seeks Volunteers and Donations for Homeless Resource Day

6th annual event will be held March 16 at Glen Burnie High School

Annapolis, MD (February 7, 2013) - Anne Arundel County is urging citizens to get involved in Homeless Resource Day, which will be held on March 16 at Glen Burnie High School.

"This event has been very successful in helping people get back on their feet and off the street," said Marcia Kennai, Director of the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services.  "The economy has been very difficult and we have seen a significant impact on children and families. Homeless Resource Day started six years ago and provides a place where people can obtain a host of services, from something as simple as a haircut to assistance with getting a State I.D., birth certificate, job placement, and housing."

Adults and families can access transportation, medical services, housing, and job assistance, as well as personal hygiene and quality of life resources.  While these services are commonplace for most residents, the homeless often have a difficult time accessing them.  Our Partnership Board to End Homelessness in Anne Arundel County has worked to create this event every year.  We have 80 service providers participating from government, non-profit, schools, and individuals.  Over 450 volunteers assist this day serving as guides, greeters, translators, and discharge personnel.

Statistics from last year’s event show the following:

•654 adults and children obtained services such as the few listed below:
•192 Birth Certificates
•71 Housing applications
•125 Social Security applications
•70 Job Information Requests
•250 Health Service Encounters
