Broadneck and Broadwater Water Reclamation Facilities Receive National Awards for Wastewater Treatment Excellence

Publish Date: 06/17/2014
Annapolis (June 17, 2014) – The National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) recently recognized the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) Bureau of Utility Operations (BUO) for continued wastewater treatment excellence.  The Broadneck and Broadwater Water Reclamation Facilities (WRF) earned NACWA Platinum Peak Performance Awards for five consecutive years of perfect National Pollutant Distribution Elimination System (NPDES) permit compliance.
The honor marks the 13th consecutive Platinum Peak Performance Award for the Broadwater WRF and reflects 17 straight years without an NPDES permit violation.  The Broadneck WRF has not had a NPDES permit violation for six consecutive years and also received a Platinum Award in 2013.
“The record of pollutant discharge permit compliance for the County’s Water Reclamation Facilities is remarkable
and is a direct reflection of the talented and dedicated men and women in the Bureaus of Utility Operations and Engineering,” said DPW Director Chris Phipps.  “We are proud of these awards and are feel fortunate that these wastewater treatment operators, managers, and engineers work in our County every day to protect the environment
and public safety.”
The 2014 NACWA’s Peak Performance Awards Program recognizes water reclamation facilities for excellence in wastewater treatment as measured by their compliance with their NPDES permit requirements in the 2013 calendar year.  Platinum Awards recognize 100% compliance with NPDES permits over a consecutive five year period.  Gold Awards honor facilities that have achieved 100 percent compliance with their NPDES permit for an entire calendar year. Silver Awards recognize facilities that have received no more than five NPDES permit violations per calendar year.
Gold and Silver Peak Performance Awards will be announced in July.
