Annapolis, Maryland (July 23, 2014) — Anne Arundel County, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Chase Brexton Health Care and Family Health Centers of Baltimore today jointly announce two major efforts to serve people affected by the closure of People’s Community Health Centers – the opening of a temporary health clinic in Glen Burnie and a new transportation service to a medical center in Brooklyn Park.

The new center, Chase Brexton Health Care at Anne Arundel County, will provide the community with pediatric and adult primary care, obstetrics and gynecology services and HIV testing and care. A full medical team, including physicians, nurses and support staff, will work at the Anne Arundel center. Chase Brexton case managers will also assist patients with obtaining medical care and other needed services.

“The Chase Brexton medical and case management team is in place now to meet the health care needs of residents in and around Glen Burnie,” said Richard Larison, president and CEO of Chase Brexton. “We are proud that we could respond quickly to establish and staff a new health center in Anne Arundel.”

People’s Community Health Centers closed its five clinics, including ones in Odenton and Brooklyn Park on June 30th. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), People’s received federal funding to provide care to low-income and uninsured patients.

Chase Brexton, also an FQHC, has received permission from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide and expand services to patients in Anne Arundel County.

“We have worked closely and expeditiously with state and federal officials to identify a high-quality medical provider to offer care to northern Anne Arundel County residents,” said County Executive Laura Neuman. “I applaud Chase Brexton for promptly stepping in to meet the healthcare needs of our community.”

"I thank the county, our partners at the Department of Health and Human Services, and Maryland's community health centers for working together on this plan to provide access to needed health care," said Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, Secretary of DHMH.

Another FQHC, Family Health Centers of Baltimore, will provide transportation services to take patients to its Brooklyn Community Health Center.

“Many people may be concerned on how to receive care now, but we’d say to them, there is a health center near you and we are ready to meet your primary health care needs,” said Paula McLellan, Chief Executive Officer of Family Health.

The Chase Brexton Health Care center is located at 791 Aquahart Road, 2nd floor, Glen Burnie and will be open initially from  8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Patients seeking information about care at the new center can call 410-837-2050. Individuals looking for information about receiving care in Brooklyn Park should call Family Health Centers of Baltimore at 410-354-2000 extension 11235. The Brooklyn Community Health Center is located at 3540 S. Hanover Street.

“We are pleased that Chase Brexton and Family Health Centers of Baltimore are able to expand to serve the needs of people in Anne Arundel County,” said Duane Taylor, CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Community Health Centers, which represents FQHCs in the region. “Our network of FQHCs have worked closely with federal, state and local officials to find a way to meet the needs of people who were at risk of losing medical care, and we believe Chase Brexton’s new center and Family Health Center’s transportation services will play critical roles in doing just that.”

Chase Brexton and Family Health Centers of Baltimore are open to all patients regardless of their ability to pay; it will serve the uninsured, those covered by Medicaid or Medicare as well as patients with private insurance.
