Anne Arundel County Student Model Government Program to Culminate with Reception and Mock County Council Hearing

Publish Date: 04/16/2014

Program Has Attracted Students Countywide

Annapolis, MD (April 16, 2014) – Last month, approximately 30 tenth and eleventh-grade students from Anne Arundel County high schools spent a day “shadowing” top government officials. The students, who are participated in the Student Model Government Program, served as Chief Administrative Officer to Chief of Police for the day.

On  April 21, the students’ hard work will be recognized during a reception, followed by a mock County Council hearing in which they will play out the roles of Council Members and government officials called to testify in front of them. The topic to be debated is cell phone towers on school grounds (mock legislation attached).

“This has been a unique opportunity for the students who have gotten a first-hand look of their government,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman. “The experience has also been meaningful for members of my staff, some of whom participated in the Student Model Government program as high-school students.”

A reception for the Student Model Government participants will be held at  4 p.m. in Room 161 of the Arundel Center, immediately followed by the Mock County Council Hearing at  5 p.m., in County Council Chambers. An official County Council Meeting will follow at  7:00 p.m.
