Anne Arundel County Student Model Government Program to Culminate with Reception and Mock County Council Hearing

Publish Date: 03/14/2014

Program Has Attracted Students from All Over the County

Annapolis, MD (March 14, 2014) – For the past three weeks, close to 30 10th and 11th grade students from Anne Arundel County high schools have been performing the tasks of top government officials. The students, who are participants in the Student Model Government Program, are doing everything from serving as Chief Administrative Officer to Chief of Police for the day.

On  March 17, the students’ hard work will be recognized during a reception, followed by a mock County Council hearing in which they will play out the roles of Council Members and government officials called to testify in front of them. The topic to be debated is cell phone towers on school grounds (mock legislation attached).

“This has been a unique opportunity for the students who have gotten an up-and-close view of their government,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman. “The experience has also been meaningful for members of my staff, many of whom participated in the Student Model Government program themselves.”

A reception for the Student Model Government participants will be held at 4 p.m. in Room 161 of the Arundel Center, immediately followed by the Mock County Council Hearing at  5 p.m., in County Council Chambers. The “official” County Council Meeting will take place as planned.

Editors’ note: In the event of inclement weather, the reception and mock hearing will be rescheduled.
