Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman Corrects Misinformation Surrounding Search for Tenant at Dairy Farm

Publish Date: 06/13/2014

Process has been fair, legal, open and transparent

Annapolis, Maryland (June 12, 2014) — Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman today responded to Scott Hymes, Candidate for County Council, District 4, criticism of actions taken to find a viable tenant to farm the US Naval Academy Dairy Farm.

“I regret that Mr. Hymes has chosen to react to misinformation and question the integrity and hard work of the county to find a qualified organic farmer for the Dairy Farm, said County Executive Neuman.  “I have heard the community’s concerns and my Administration has gone to extraordinary lengths to involve the community in the process and find a mutually agreeable solution.  To suggest that the process is not fair, legal, or transparent is, at best, disingenuous.”

The surrounding community expressed concerns after learning the current tenant was considering to discontinue organic farming and begin conventional farming.  Neither the County’s lease with the U.S. Navy nor the sub-lease with the current tenant farmer requires that the farm be organic.

County Executive Neuman communicated with the community on multiple occasions that it was her desire to keep the farm organic and if a qualified farmer committed to organically farming the land was identified, the county would sign a lease with them.  If no qualified organic farmer was found, the county intended to enter into a long-term lease to allow for conventional farming.  It is not prudent to allow the land to be unoccupied and incur additional property maintenance costs at taxpayers’ expense.

The county issued a Request for Letters of Interest in order to find a qualified organic farmer on April 7, 2014.  Attached are the FACTS and TIMELINE surrounding the current situation at the Dairy Farm and back-up documentation.  All documentation pertaining to this process is public record and the administration has been forthcoming in making it available.  The Request for Letters of Interest is available on the county's website: http://www.aacounty.org/CentServ/Purchasing/solicitations.cfm.

This process has been fair, legal, open and transparent.
