County Executive Laura Neuman Encourages Screening as the Best Defense Against Cancer

Annapolis, MD (October 3, 2013) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder for women to become educated and talk to their health care provider about cancer screenings.

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Anne Arundel County,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman. “I encourage all County residents to join the fight against this disease. Speak to your friends, family members and co-workers about the importance of screening for breast cancer.”

Information to read and share is on the County Department of Health’s Learn To Live Web page,www.LearnToLiveHealthy.org.  The Department of Health is offering a free Women’s Health Kit, which contains information on cancer screenings and other women’s health topics.  Taking advantage of early detection screenings is a woman’s best defense against cancer.  Beginning at age 40, women should discuss mammography with their doctor to determine what is best for them.

The Department of Health also offers free mammograms and breast exams to eligible women. County residents can call the Learn To Live Line at 410-222-7979 to find out if they are eligible for free breast screenings and to request a free Women’s Health Kit.
