Annapolis (March 5, 2008) - County Executive John R. Leopold announced today that the Anne Arundel County Office of Law and the Department of Inspections and Permits released the results of the February court proceedings. Each month, these agencies bring unresolved and contested violation cases before the courts. Civil citation cases are heard on the first Tuesday of the month and injunction cases are heard on the first Thursday of the month in District Court. "It is inexcusable that the majority of these violations occurred within Chesapeake Bay critical areas," said County Executive John R. Leopold. "The penalties resulting from February’s Court hearings sends a clear message that those living near critical areas should respect the laws that were designed to protect them," he added. Judgments totaling more than $9,000 were ordered. These cases involved violations of the Zoning, Building, Electric, Grading and Chesapeake Bay Critical Area laws. In all instances, the Department of Inspections and Permits identified, investigated and attempted resolution with the property owners or responsible parties. A violation is referred to the Office of Law attorneys to seek adjudication if the property owner or responsible party elects to stand trial or is unwilling to comply with the law. |
