County Executive Leopold Applauds Citizens for Reaching 40 Percent Recycling Rate

Once-a-week collection will mean lower solid waste charge

Annapolis, MD (January 10, 2012) - County Executive John R. Leopold announced today that residents are now recycling at a record curbside rate of 40 percent, compared to a stagnant 31 percent when he originally took office.

“Our residents have embraced recycling and are making the right environmental and fiscal choices,” County Executive Leopold said. “As we move closer to my goal of each resident recycling half of everything they throw away at the curbside, I urge every citizen to learn how simple and easy it is to recycle.”

The “Recycle. More. Often.” campaign, coupled with improved operations and action on recommendations from the Recycling Advisory Committee have greatly increased the amount of recyclables diverted from the Millersville Landfill. More recycling will extend the life of the landfill and delay the costly purchase of land for a new facility.

The increased recycling at the curbside has made the current second trash collection day unnecessary and wasteful. Beginning in June 2012, Anne Arundel County will move forward with the Once-A-Week Curbside Trash Collection initiative.

“Recycling has paid off for Anne Arundel County,” said County Executive Leopold. “We are confident that savings from fewer trash pickups will allow us to reduce the fee charged to residents for trash collection.”
