County Executive Leopold Leases Whitmore Park to City of Annapolis
Agreement marks successful partnership
Annapolis, MD (April 5, 2012) - County Executive John R. Leopold today leased Whitmore Park to the City of Annapolis, where it will remain the site of events like First Sundays.
“We are pleased that all of the parties concerned about this site were able to come together and agree on a solution that helps relieve a cost burden for the County and continue the activities the community has become accustomed to,” County Executive Leopold said. “I want to thank Mayor Cohen, Councilman Trumbauer and the Annapolis community for their collaboration on this issue.”
Whitmore Park Open Area is a small parcel slightly more than half an acre in size. It has an appraised value of $642,500 and is zoned for mixed use development. The parcel was set for surplus to relieve the cost of ongoing maintenance and repairs.
"Tough times require creative thinking, and I am pleased that Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis could work together with the community to reach an agreeable solution to preserve Whitmore Park,” Councilman Chris Trumbauer said. “This cooperative outcome retains open space within the City limits, and the use agreement with the surrounding community is a benefit to all."
A special ribbon cutting event will be held on Earth Day, Saturday, April 21, at 9 a.m., followed by “greening” of the space by volunteers.
"This small urban park has become an important community resource in providing a venue for events like First Sundays," Mayor Josh Cohen said. "I am thrilled that the City and County have come together to ensure that it is maintained as a community asset."
