Intense Road and Culvert Repairs Completed Ahead of Schedule Annapolis, Maryland (November 22, 2011) — Extensive and complex culvert and road repairs have been completed and Old Herald Harbor Road will officially reopen this Wednesday, November 23. The Crownsville road was closed to motorists by the Bureau of Highways (BOH) due to major damage associated with the heavy rains and flashfloods of September’s Tropical Storm Lee. Old Herald Harbor Road and Patuxent River Road in Davidsonville were the most severely damaged County roads following the record setting rains in September. Both required major engineering and construction efforts to repair the complete road and culvert washouts. The BOH anticipates completed repairs and reopening of Patuxent River Road within three weeks. The required County engineering efforts for proper design repairs, reconstruction and restorations were extremely time consuming. The designs for repair and actual work had to adhere to all Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) over site. Regulations included allowances for the formation of a natural stream bottom to support adequate fish passage. Engineering Effort · Detail surveys to establish spot elevations · Field meetings with MDE to discuss damage and alternative restoration strategies. · The need for engineering calculations and restoration design. · MDE approval of restoration strategy and design. Construction Work · Removal of collapsed pipe remnants and other debris · Removal of trees with compromised roots and other travel lane hazards. · Replacing the inadequate pipe · Installing properly sized pipes to allow safe conveyance of 100 yr storm w/o road overtopping. · Pavement restoration · Guardrail installation
