County Executive Leopold Signs Legislation to Make Pet Registration More Convenient

New fees offer discount for 3-year registration

Annapolis, MD (October 24, 2011) – County Executive John R. Leopold today signed legislation into law making it more convenient for citizens to register their pets.

“We want to make it easier and cheaper for citizens to comply with the law, which requires that all pets are registered with the County,” County Executive Leopold said. “Requiring that pets be licensed helps ensure that they are properly vaccinated and also helps reunite lost pets with their owners.”

The new law allows citizens to register their pets for three years, in addition to the yearly licensing requirement already in place. The new fee structure provides a discount for signing up for three years.

A one-year registration for an animal that is not spayed or neutered is $15; spayed or neutered pets cost $4. A three-year registration is $40 for an animal that is not spayed or neutered; spayed or neutered is $10. Discounts are available for senior citizens, who can register spayed or neutered pets for three years for free. A three-year license must coincide with a three-year rabies vaccination.

Fines for having an unregistered pet start at $50.

Pet owners must show proof of rabies vaccination for each dog or cat owned when submitting a registration form. For more information, go to www.aacounty.org/animalcontrol or “like” Animal Control on Facebook.
