Office of Emergency Management Preparedness Fair Canceled

Heavy Rain, Flooding and Ground Saturation

Annapolis, Maryland (September 8, 2011)—Anne Arundel County’s Office of Emergency Management today announced the cancellation of the second annual Preparedness Fair that was scheduled for Saturday, September 10, 2011. Continued heavy rain has resulted in flooding and ground saturation where the fair was to be held. The extended forecast calls for potentially more precipitation during the weekend. No rain date will be scheduled.

“Even though severe weather conditions have caused us to cancel this year’s Preparedness Fair, there are many other resources that citizens can utilize to learn how to prepare for any type of emergency”, said Captain Eric Hodge, Director of the Office of Emergency Management. “We encourage everyone to use the resources on our website to prepare themselves and their families now.”

Use the following tips to start preparing now.

• Have a plan in the event you need to shelter in place for 72 hours or evacuate.
• Assemble a supply kit with water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, fresh batteries and flashlight, radio, medications, and special need supplies for babies, elderly, and pets.
• Fill up gas tanks in vehicles.
• Have cash available.
• Secure all outdoor furniture, decorations, and trash cans or bring them indoors.
• Always use generators outdoors and away from open windows. A bicycle lock can be used to secure generators.
