County Executive Leopold to Host Public Roundtable on Mental Health Issues

Forum will discuss ways to prevent tragedy

Annapolis, MD (February 7, 2011) - County Executive John R. Leopold today announced that he will host a forum to discuss mental health services aimed at preventing events like the deadly shootings in Tucson and at Virginia Tech, Fort Hood and Columbine High.

“Mental heath is an important issue that is often overlooked until it is too late,” County Executive Leopold said. “We need to come together as a community to discuss how we approach mental health and how we treat those with mental illness. The forum will focus on prevention, early intervention and treatment, and explore ways to provide early, effective assistance to people who need it.”

The forum will be held at Anne Arundel Community College on February 14th in the Cade Building, Room 219, from 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The panel will review the numerous behavioral health services currently available and how the police, mental health, public schools, and other agencies and providers function and determine what strategies work best.

Panelists will also examine how the current fiscal climate is adversely affecting an already stressed service delivery system and barriers to access to needed services. They will discuss the importance of a public education effort called “Mental Health First Aid,” the benefits of such public awareness, and how this could be spread through the community. Finally, they will share ideas about what laws and regulations could be improved by our County and State representatives.

Panelists will include:

- Frank Sullivan, Executive Director, Anne Arundel County Mental Health Agency, Inc.
- James Teare Sr., Anne Arundel County Police Chief
- Dr. Steven Daviss, Chairman of Psychiatry, Baltimore Washington Medical Center
- Frank R. Weathersbee, Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney
- Dr. Ivan Harrell, Dean of Student Services, Anne Arundel Community College
- Katherine Rovendro, Director, Anne Arundel County Crisis Response System
- Gayle Cicero, Coordinator of Student Counseling, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
