County Executive Leopold Seeks Volunteers for Commission on Disabilities Issues

Today is 20th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act

Annapolis (July 26, 2010) - County Executive John R. Leopold, a long time advocate for disability issues, announced today that he is accepting resumes from individuals who would be interested in serving as a voting member of the Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues. Today also marks the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"Today is a historic day in which we recognize the anniversary of this landmark civil rights legislation," said County Executive John R. Leopold. "In keeping with the significance of the day, we had an exciting opening of the Lake Waterford Adaptive Recreation Complex this weekend and now are asking for more people to come forward and serve on this important commission."

The Commission on Disability Issues is comprised of 21 voting members and 17 ex-officio members. The purpose of the Commission is to promote and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by advising the County Executive, County Council and State Legislature on the coordination and development of government policies, programs, services and allocation of resources.

"I’m very excited and encouraged by the work of this commission," said Alan Vandendriesshe, Chairman of the Commission. "It’s important that we move forward with a full slate of commission members so that we can continue to identify and elevate issues that affect persons with disabilities to County Executive Leopold and all the elected officials within Anne Arundel County."

Meetings are open to the public and take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Annapolis. Individuals needing accommodations should contact Pam Jordan, ADA Coordinator, at least 7 business days in advance. Anyone who wishes to submit a resume to be considered for the commission should send it to Ms. Jordan at 2666 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. For additional information, call 410-222-4383.
