County Executive Leopold Thanks Board of Public Works for Approval of Open Space Projects

Three projects include turf fields, expansion of Lake Shore Complex

Annapolis (July 29, 2010) - County Executive John R. Leopold today thanked the Maryland Board of Public Works for approving $2 million to add turf fields at Southern and South River High Schools, as well as expand the Lake Shore Athletic Complex.

"These facilities will help address the increased participation in youth and adult athletics in the southern and northeast sectors of the County," County Executive Leopold said. "The shovel ready status of these projects presents immediate opportunities for local contractors and consultants, which is extremely important to our local economy."

The Board approved over $1.5 million to add synthetic turf fields at Southern and South River High Schools, and $522,000 towards the expansion of Lake Shore Athletic Complex. With the completion of Southern and South River turf fields, eleven out of twelve high school stadiums will include synthetic turf. The Northeast High School field will be installed as part of the Northeast High School Renovation project currently under construction. County Executive Leopold has been a leader statewide in completing these state-of-the-art fields.

The expansion of Lake Shore Athletic Complex will include five natural turf baseball-softball fields, a multi-purpose field and related parking.
