County Executive Leopold Announces Hiring Preference has Provided Employment for 56 Veterans

Almost 200 received job interviews for public safety

Annapolis (April 16, 2009) - County Executive John R. Leopold announced today that 56 military veterans have become County employees since a preference was approved a year ago, with our veterans becoming detention officers, surveyors, police officers and recreation workers.

"Veterans bring so much experience and years of public service to these positions that they deserve a leg up," County Executive Leopold said. "My Administration is proud to honor military service while also maintaining fiscal discipline by filling only those positions that fall under public safety and enterprise funds."

The legislation was sponsored by the County Council and became effective in January 2008 with County Executive Leopold’s signature. Since then, 192 veterans have been granted interviews for County positions.
