Route will provide connection to MARC and Ft. Meade Annapolis (March 17, 2009) - County Executive John R. Leopold today announced that federal stimulus funds will be used to purchase two ultra-low sulfur diesel-powered buses in order to provide service to Fort George G. Meade, surrounding communities and nearby MARC rail stations. "Base Realignment and Closure will bring new commuters to West County, and this funding is a good start toward getting those workers on mass transit," County Executive Leopold said. "The routes will be synchronized with rail service at the Odenton and Savage MARC stations, as well as shuttle bus service provided by Ft. Meade. This acquisition will enhance my Administration’s vision for mixed-use transit-oriented development in West County. Increased transit use means improved transportation mobility and a cleaner environment." The $386,000 in federal aid includes the purchase of radios, GPS devices, fare boxes, wheelchair accessibility and bike racks. The County assumes operating costs. The buses are slated to operate on peak hours Monday through Friday. |
