County Executive Leopold Proposes Dedicated State Fund for BRAC Infrastructure Improvements

Letter to Lt. Gov. Brown highlights priorities

Annapolis (December 19, 2008)-County Executive John R. Leopold has outlined infrastructure needs to prepare for Base Realignment and Closure around Fort George G. Meade to Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown, including establishment of a dedicated fund to pay for construction.

In a letter sent to the Lieutenant Governor yesterday, County Executive Leopold highlighted projects that are critical to handling an influx of jobs coming to West County, including mass transit, road and intersection improvements.

"This fund will ensure the success of the massive investment in military facilities at Fort Meade, provide the necessary transportation infrastructure for safe and efficient access to and around Fort Meade, as well as provide for both near and intermediate term employment opportunities for the region’s work force," County Executive Leopold said.

The letter identifies several sources of federal funding, including the economic stimulus package that gives priority consideration to requests from defense-affected communities.

Among the top priorities:

  • Expansion of Route 175 and associated intersection improvements
  • Purchase of 16 buses, along with operating funds for eight routes
  • Addition of park and ride lots to serve as focal points for mass transit
