County Executive Leopold Creates Regional Growth Management Committee

Annapolis, MD (March 1, 2007) - County Executive John R. Leopold signed Executive Order number 17 creating the Fort George G. Meade Regional Growth Management Committee. The regional approach of the committee will ensure a more defined focus on the broader regional opportunities and challenges of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) issues.

" The Fort Meade Region’s challenge is to not only accommodate this growth in a manner that is both efficient and effective over the long term, but to let it serve as a positive transforming catalyst for our communities," said County Executive John Leopold.

The Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) recommends that local governments establish a regional community growth management organization, identifying regional and community impacts from the expansion, as well as to coordinate initial assessments of important BRAC related issues.

To date, Howard, Baltimore and Carroll Counties along with the cities of Baltimore and Laurel have joined Anne Arundel County in this regional initiative.

The Committee is charged with:

  1. Development of a regional growth management strategy to address the relocation schedule
  2. Identifying and addressing regional issues such as housing availability, utilities, services and public education
  3. Managing and monitoring regional growth

Regional leaders believe the successful implementation of BRAC will help reinforce an exceptional quality of life while increasing the region’s prominent role in providing the technology required for the security of our nation.
