County Executive John R. Leopold Announces Anne Arundel County Government Saves $4 Million in Energy Expenses

'

Annapolis (August 14, 2007)---County Executive John R. Leopold announced today that Anne Arundel County Government saved more than $4 million dollars in energy expenses in FY 2007 well above County projections and a total of $1,644,603 less than current retail energy prices.

The cost-savings of more than $4,159, 077 is attributed to the purchase of wholesale power from the regional grid about five years ago with local governments including Baltimore City, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties through the Baltimore Metropolitan Council. Collectively, the group’s efforts saved taxpayers about 30 million dollars.

"This savings strategy is in keeping with my commitment to contain the operational costs of government," said County Executive Leopold. "I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with the county public schools to reduce their expenses in this category as well."

This new, innovative procurement strategy won the prestigious National Institute of Governmental Purchasing Best Practice Award.
