County Executive Leopold Requests Fast Track for Widening of Route 175

Annapolis, MD (January 18, 2007) - In a letter to Governor Martin O’Malley, Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold requested that the timetable for the widening of Route 175 in Anne Arundel County be accelerated to the greatest extent possible.

"This road-widening project is a top transportation priority in Anne Arundel County and is vital to help us prepare for BRAC’S explosive growth," said County Executive Leopold.

The Defense Information Systems Agency is required by law to be functioning at Fort Meade by September of 2011. The current completion date for the 175-widening project is planned for 2013. The County Executive’s request to the Governor for an accelerated timetable will allow the road infrastructure to be in place as BRAC-related growth develops.

In the County Executive’s request to the Governor, Mr. Leopold proposed utilizing the strategic highway network provision contained in the Defense Highway Act to provide assistance to military bases, such as Fort Meade as a source of funding.
