Department of Health Opens Bear Neck and Whitemarsh Creeks

Annapolis (July 7, 2006) - The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has reopened Bear Neck Creek and Whitemarsh Creek in Edgewater for swimming, waterskiing and other direct water contact. The Department closed the creeks following a wastewater overflow on June 28, 2006.

Test results from samples collected from the creeks show their water meets standards acceptable for direct water contact. Standards are set by the Maryland Department of the Environment and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

For more information about Bear Neck and Whitemarsh creeks and to see water quality sampling results for more than 100 County bathing beaches, visit the Water Quality page on the Department of Health’s Web site. The Water Quality page also has a new section for signing up to receive free e-mail alerts when a County recreational waterway is closed or an advisory is issued by the Department of Health.
