Overturned Propane Truck Results in Evacuations

Annapolis (November 17, 2006)

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department reports that a tanker truck carrying 2500 gallons of liquid propane overturned near the intersection of Owensville Road (Maryland Route 255) and Tenthouse Court in West River at 8:30 a.m. this morning.

The Fire Department responded to this single-vehicle accident and determined that liquid propane was leaking from the tanker. A precautionary decision to evacuate approximately 8 homes in the immediate vicinity was made. The area has been safely evacuated without incident and the Galesville Firehouse is available as a shelter for impacted residents.

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is working with Fire Department officials to assess the leak and determine the safest manner in which to off-load the propane. It is estimated that the entire operation will take until early evening to complete. In the interim, Owensville Road will remain closed to traffic.

For further information, the public may contact the Office of Emergency Management at (410) 222-0600.
