Break in 42” Water Main Located  - Repairs Continue

ARCHIVED NEWS RELEASE

Additional Water Restrictions in Effect

Annapolis, MD (July 30, 2006)-Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens announced this morning crews will continue to work on repairing the 42-inch water main, located on Marley Neck Boulevard, until the repairs are complete. Officials have identified a portion of pipe that needs replacing, and are waiting for the replacement pipe to be delivered.

While water pressure levels in North County are slowly increasing, the excessive heat forecast for the area, combined with the significant water main break, has prompted the need for additional water restrictions in the North County area.

The affected area zip codes are as follows: 21226 Curtis Bay and Orchard Beach, 21060 Glen Burnie East of Ritchie Highway and 21122 Pasadena, North of MD Route 100.

The mandatory water restrictions will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice. The 3 zip codes now under the mandatory restrictions were previously under voluntary water restrictions. The new mandatory restrictions include:

  • No watering of lawns or plants with free-running hose or sprinkler.
  • No washing of vehicles boats or other equipment at your home
  • No washing of paved or outdoor surfaces and structures, such as sidewalks, driveways, decks, patios, etc.
  • No filling or topping off  private swimming pools, ornamental fountains, artificial waterfalls or reflecting pools.

“This is certainly not something the County wants to do, but it is a necessary measure, in the short term, to ensure water is available for residents and for public safety,” said County Executive Owens.

Along with the mandatory restrictions, the County Executive is also urging residents to limit indoor water use. Suggestions include:

  • When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink or basin with soapy water. Quickly rinse under a slow-moving stream from the faucet.
  • In the shower, turn water on to get wet; turn off to lather up; then turn back on to rinse off. Repeat when washing your hair.
  • Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded. Set the water level for the size of load you are using.
  • Store drinking water in the refrigerator. Don’t let the tap run while you are waiting for cool water to flow.
  • Don’t let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush your teeth first while waiting for water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin.

Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet.
