County Executive Owens Announces Financial Support Continues for Adult Drug Treatment Court

'

Annapolis, MD (September 11, 2006) - Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens announced a $90,000 grant has been awarded to the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court’s "Adult Drug Treatment Court" program. The program oversees criminal offenders currently on supervised probation with intense supervision and treatment services.

"We know the drug treatment courts are successful in helping both adults and juveniles in the County," said County Executive Owens. "This grant will help to ensure the Adult Drug Treatment Court will continue for a second year in Anne Arundel County."

A drug court team, made up of eight members from various County agencies, meets weekly to discuss the offender’s progress and reviews each case prior to the offender appearing before Judge Michael E. Loney bi-monthly.

The "Adult Drug Treatment Court" has been working to reduce substance abuse and recidivism among offenders since last December. Other goals of the Anne Arundel County Drug Court include:

  • Helping offenders become more productive members of the community
  • Reducing criminal behavior
  • Reducing cost to the community by shortening the period of incarceration

The grant was awarded by the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention and will fund the program by supporting a clinical case manager, addiction specialist, supplies and treatment services for participants enrolled in the program.
