Verizon Strike Results in Broken Wastewater Line

'

Annapolis (October 17, 2005) - The Department of Public Works announced that Verizon, at approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday morning struck a 12-inch force main along the side of Route 2 near the South River Bridge (2806 Solomons Island Road) causing about 10,000 gallons of wastewater to spill from the damaged pipe.

The Bureau of Utility Operations dispatched repair crews immediately who were able to contain and collect the escaping wastewater prior to its reaching the South River. Most of the wastewater was removed by vactor trucks, which were able to remove the wastewater directly from the point of impact. The flow was temporarily redirected and repairs were made to the damaged pipe section.

The Maryland Department of the Environment, as well as the Anne Arundel County Department of Health were notified. The Department of Health has assessed South River at South River Bridge (Rte. 2) in response to the wastewater spill. The Department of Health has determined there is no public health risk associated with the spill and there are no restrictions on direct water contact for the South River.
