$20 Million Will Be Targeted to County’s Older Communities
Annapolis (May 10, 2005) - Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens’ proposed FY 2006 Budget tackles a road maintenance backlog that goes back decades with $20 million in new "one time" funds.
Inadequate funding for road maintenance over decades has left many of the County’s roads in poor condition. All of the County Executive’s previous budgets increased the level of spending for road maintenance with a total investment of $67.5 million over the last six years.
"When it comes to the maintenance of our County’s roads, we’ve been playing catch-up since I took office. Even though I have poured more than $67.5 million into road maintenance over the last six years, the backlog was always looming," Ms. Owens said. "I think we’re fortunate this year to be able to put an additional $20 million in new ‘one time’ funds toward road reconstruction. I have specifically asked the Department of Public Works to target our older communities in all areas of the County."
The County Executive’s proposed budget also increases annual funding for road repairs by $6 million in Fiscal Year 2006 and in each successive year of the Capital program, bringing the County’s annual commitment to $17 million.
