Anne Arundel County Executive Janet Owens honors the selfless men and women of the “Greatest Generation”

'

Annapolis, MD (August 30, 2005) - On this day in 1945, General Douglas MacArthur landed in Japan to oversee the formal surrender ceremony, and to organize the postwar Japanese government. Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens said today, “We honor the dedicated men and women who served in World War II, and I thank God for the “Greatest Generation.” If it weren’t for them, we would not be enjoying the freedoms we enjoy today.” County Executive Owens presented WWII Veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star John Robinson, along with Earl Whipple, WWII Veteran, a proclamation in remembrance of World War II Veterans worldwide. Secretary of Veterans Affairs George Owings was also in attendance presenting the men, a proclamation from Governor Bob Ehrlich. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates, there are some 3.6 million WWII veterans living today. Sadly, we are saying farewell to about fourteen-hundred per day. The County Executive asks that residents of Anne Arundel County pay their respects to our local WWII Veterans during this 60th Anniversary year.
