Agreement Gives Anne Arundel County Management of Park and Facilities Annapolis, MD (October 27,2005) - Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens and Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley today announced that they have reached an agreement on the management and control of Fort Smallwood Park located in northern Anne Arundel County. Under the terms of the licensing agreement, Anne Arundel County will take over operational control and responsibility of the park’s maintenance for a term of 45 years, with the option to renew. "This agreement is an enormous win for Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County," said County Executive Owens. "The agreement demonstrates regional cooperation and regional benefit." Specifically, Anne Arundel County will control the scheduling and use of the park facilities, the establishment, collection, and benefit of entrance and use fees, the licensing of concessions, maintenance of buildings, grounds and facilities, and will have responsibility for security and public safety including police and fire response and enforcement. "Fort Smallwood Park is a great asset for both Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County," said Mayor Martin O’Malley. "We are pleased to enter this regional partnership that will enhance the park and its facilities, and will preserve and maintain our green spaces for the enjoyment of our citizens." In addition, Anne Arundel County will have the right to establish, charge, and collect park entry and use fees. Baltimore City residents will not be charged more than Anne Arundel County residents to enter the park or use any of its facilities. Anne Arundel County has already appropriated funds for initial renovation, construction and repairs to the park. Located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, Fort Smallwood Park offers a breath taking panoramic view across its 100 acres of land. Park amenities include campgrounds, playground, picnic area, fishing, and pavilions. |
