Commander’s Award For Public Service Recognizes Ms. Owens' Dedication and Service to the Community Annapolis (June 8, 2005) - Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens was honored with the Fort George G. Meade Commander’s Award for Public Service. Installation Commander Col. John W. Ives presented Ms. Owens the award and medal this afternoon at the Army base. The Award Citation reads: "Janet Owens is presented the Commander's Award for Public Service for exceptional performance of duty, faithful service and outstanding loyalty in support of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and Fort George G. Meade. Her proactive involvement ensured that today's great Fort Meade installation will be better tomorrow. Ms. Owens' dedication and service to the community are truly noteworthy. A grateful community extends its heartfelt thanks for a job well done." "This is one of the finest honors I have ever received," Ms. Owens said. "I truly value our relationship with Ft. Meade and Col. Ives. Ft. Meade is one of the County’s greatest assets and we look forward to working together in the future." The Commander’s Award is the highest civilian award outside of the Department of Defense (DOD). A Major General must approve the next highest award.
