Lula G. Scott Community Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony & Playground Dedication

'

The historic restoration and adaptive re-use project preserved the Shady Side School and the Churchton School, two of Anne Arundel County's historically significant Julius Rosenwald Schools.

These two-room school houses were originally built in part with matching money from the Julius Rosenwald School Building Program, an initiative by the President of Sears, Roebuck and Co. in the early 20th century to provide funding for the construction of schools for African-Americans int he rural South. The Shady Side School was built on the site in 1927, and the Churchton School, built in 1921, was moved to this site and connected to the Shady Side School in 1953.  As part of the move, the buildings were connected with an addition that provided a kitchen, bathroom facilities, and storage areas. In 1958, three additional classrooms were added to the side of the building.

The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
