UPDATE: The Blue Crew has been so efficient in their work on the new roof for the Ralph Bunch Community Center, they've taken on painting the building as well. Paint was donated by McCormick Paints. The Blue Crew will continue their work through Thursday afternoon, October 7. |
Annapolis (October 4, 2004) -- Thirteen Sailors assigned to the USS Maryland, a TRIDENT submarine stationed in Georgia, are coming to Edgewater for a week in October to help replace the Ralph Bunch Community Center roof, which was aged and in disrepair. Four of the sailors are Maryland natives, and two are graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy. Charles Rogers, President of Chesapeake Carpentry Contractors of Shady Side, and some of his employees, taught the sailors how to shingle a roof. Mr. Rogers and his crew donated time and expertise, and assisted with the procurement of roofing materials and tools from their suppliers. Other donations included a dumpster from Bay Area Disposal, Owings, MD. The owner, Bobby Strohecker, lives in Shady Side. County Executive Janet S. Owens awarded the Ralph Bunch Community Center a $5,000 grant for the roofing materials. This was the second trip to Anne Arundel County for eight of the 13 sailors. In March, Commander Jeffrey Trussler and his "Blue Crew" spent four days working on demolition projects in the Cedarhurst community to help residents recover from Tropical Storm Isabel. Crews of the USS Maryland have been volunteering for one week a year in the State of Maryland since the submarine was commissioned in 1992. The U.S. Naval Academy will supplied housing for the sailors. |
