Federal Award to Establish Severn Health Center Annapolis (September 2, 2003) - County Executive Janet S. Owens today announced that an Anne Arundel County health services project has been awarded a $714,938 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grantee, People's Community Health Centers, Inc. (PCHC), will use the funds to set up a health center in the Pioneer City community in Severn, Maryland. The center will bring primary care and other health services, including dental care, to area residents regardless of income or insurance status. Anne Arundel County was the only location in Maryland awarded the federal grant. The health center is expected to be operational by the end of the year. "I am proud that Anne Arundel County was selected," Ms. Owens said. "This grant is a monumental step towards improving the overall quality of life in the Severn community. It shows what positive accomplishments can be made when community, nonprofit and government representatives join together to help County residents. These funds will target the underserved health care needs in this area and provide job opportunities for our citizens." "We look forward to working with People's Community Health Centers," Ms. Owens continued. "They have proven to be a wonderful community partner." PCHC Executive Director Patricia Cassatt said, "Thanks go to Congressman 'Dutch' Ruppersberger and Senator Barbara Mikulski for their commitment to the expansion of health care services for underserved residents of Anne Arundel County. I also want to thank Reverend Cynthia Belt for her devotion to the people of Pioneer City, her insight and the unwavering spirit that she brought to this project." County Health Officer Frances B. Phillips said, "This is good news for a program what will bring basic health care to thousands of County children, families and seniors. People's Community Health Centers has a strong track record with the Department of Health and is committed to building a full partnership with the Severn community."
