Annapolis (July 21, 2003) -The Department of Public Works reports that a wastewater force main broke this morning. While the investigation into how much wastewater left the system, early estimates indicate that 100,000 gallons were spilled. The break was reported to the Emergency Dispatch Center at 7:00 a.m. Crews were on-site within minutes of the call. The break occurred at the intersection of Arundel-on-the-Bay and Thomas Point Roads in Annapolis. Officials at the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Anne Arundel County Department of Health have been notified of the spill. The Department of Health will test the waters of Oyster Creek to determine what, if any, impact this overflow may have on recreational uses. The Department of Public Works has cleaned and posted the affected area. In the interim, residents are urged to avoid contact with the area near the intersection of Arundel-on-the Bay and Thomas Point Roads and the vegetated area that leads to Oyster Creek. Swimming and other recreational water contact in Oyster Creek should be avoided until further notice from the department of Health. If anyone should come into contact with the affected area, hands and clothing should be washed immediately. A preliminary investigation into the cause revealed two holes in the force main, possibly due to corrosion, which allowed the wastewater to leave the system. The repairs were complete at approximately 2:00 p.m . today and normal public wastewater service restored at that time. |
