121,000 Still Without Power Millersville, MD (Sept. 20, 2003) - Earlier this morning, there were two fatalities due to suspected accidental carbon monoxide poisoning through unsafe use of a generator. Residents using generators are urged to use them safely by: - Operation on exterior of residence
- Close windows to avoid infiltration. Install carbon monoxide detectors
For more information about the safe usage of generators, please call the County's Emergency Operations Center at (410) 222-8040. There remains a significant loss of power in Anne Arundel County. As of this evening, 121,000 customers are still without electricity. As of 6:00 p.m. today: - 41 County roads are closed, mostly due to downed wires; Bay Drive in Bay Ridge is closed due to severe storm surge erosion. The Department of Public Works is taking appropriate and immediate measures to stabilize and repair the road.
- 5 Traffic Signals are down
- All of the County's wastewater plants are fully operational, either through commercial or generator power
- All of the County's water treatment plants are fully operational, either through commercial or generator power; the only exception is the recently acquired Rose Haven plant which serves customers by gravity and has enough water to supply customers through Monday.
- The water and wastewater restriction is lifted - public water and wastewater customers may now use and discharge water at normal levels
- Only one of the County's four shelters remains open at Annapolis Senior High School, where there are currently three clients. The total client population served at the shelters during the duration of the storm was 260.
- To date, roughly 570 homes and 15 businesses have been identified to have major flood damage. Major flood damage means that the structure has received some extent of flooding and the house is not in a habitable condition. In addition, to date there are roughly 100 structural collapses. Damage assessment teams are still making their way through the more damaged sections of the County.
- The County is in the process of securing dumpsters for public use. Information about locations will be issued as soon as possible.
Residents and Businesses on Private Wells Residents and business-owners with private wells that have been covered with floodwaters should immediately refrain from using their well water. Under that circumstance, the well is considered contan1inated until it has been disinfected and tested. These private well owners should use bottled or municipal water from County distribution sites or boiled water. Beginning Monday, private well owners affected by floodwaters should call the Anne Arundel County Department of Health at (410) 222-7364 during regular business hours. Potable (Drinking) Water Available With the exception of the following 4 fire stations, residents may bring their own container to any fire station in the County for public water. The four (4) stations that do not have public/potable water available are Deale, Brooklyn, Galesville and Jessup. Perishable Food The public is advised that food that reaches a temperature greater than 40 degrees F for a period of four hours should be considered contan1inated and disposed of rather than eaten. Frozen food will stay good until it has thawed. Recreational Waters and Bathing Beaches Advisory Due to previous power loss at area wastewater treatment plants, the Anne Arundel County Department of Health advises against swimming, bathing and other contact with recreational waters. Tetanus Vaccine As residents begin to clean up debris and repair storm-damaged property, the potential for an accident or injury may increase. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene says vaccines for prevention of tetanus are available. The vaccine is often recommended if a skin-penetrating injury or wound occurs. The vaccine is available through the Anne Arundel County Health Department, doctors' offices and hospitals. Landfills Effective today, Anne Arundel County has extended hours at three County landfills until further notice to assist residents with storm cleanup. The Millersville, Sudley and Glen Burnie Landfills will be open 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. (Monday through Sunday). - Millersville Landfill

Residents should direct questions on household hazardous waste to the County's Emergency Operations Center (410) 222-8040. Showers The County has made available four locations for residents to use shower facilities. The showers will be available until 9:00 p.m. tonight, and 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. tomorrow. People using the facilities should bring their own soap and towels. The four locations are: - Annapolis Senior High School, 2700 Riva Road, Annapolis

- Annapolis Swim Center, Riva Road
