Significant Power Loss Impacts Treatment Plants

Millersville, MD (Sept. 19, 2003) - Due to the loss of commercial power and production of water at the County's Arnold Water Treatment Plant, disruption in water service could occur mid-morning or early afternoon in the area of the Broadneck Peninsula, from Cypress Creek South to Route 50 (which includes Arnold through Cape St. Claire). Once BGE restores power, the County will work to return service as rapidly as possible. Conservation of water to the fullest extent possible will be extremely important to the County's ability to restore service to the area.

 Additionally:

  • 150 County Roads are Closed - 80% due to downed wires and trees
  • 3 of the County's 7 Water Reclamation Facilities have no power, causing untreated wastewater to discharge into the receiving rivers
    • Cox Creek Water Reclamation Facility treats an average of 12 million gallons per day and discharges to the Patapsco River. Without commercial power in the Cox Creek
sewer service area, the County anticipates uncontrolled discharge of wastewater from a number of pumping stations will occur.
    • Patuxent Reclamation Facility treats an average of 4.6 million gallons a day and discharges to the Patuxent River.
    • Maryland City Water Reclamation Facility treats an average of 1 million gallons a day and discharges to the Little Patuxent River
  • As of 6:00 a.m. this morning, 95 people took shelter at Southern High School 21 people at
Meade High School 54 people at Northeast High School and 32 at Annapolis High School
