Annapolis (September 18, 2003) - Anne Arundel County in conjunction with the American Red Cross, opened four shelters throughout the County for residents who live in storm surge areas or areas that are subject to inland flooding, The shelters opened at 9:00 a.m, on Thursday, September 18, 2003. Care-dependent residents should bring their care givers with them to the shelter, as well as medications and oxygen (if needed). The Red Cross asks citizens seeking shelter to bring with them a change of clothes, pillows and blankets, basic toiletries, and board games or small toys for children. Only service animals, such as seeing-eye dogs, will be permitted in the shelters. Every effort will be made to accommodate domestic pets at an alternative site if residents are required to evacuate. Residents may call (410) 222- 8040, to seek assistance sheltering their pets. If possible, residents are encouraged to make alternative plans for their pets in advance.
