County Government Employees On Liberal Leave Thursday American Red Cross Shelters To Open at 9 a.m. Thursday Senior Centers Closed Thursday and Friday Annapolis (September 17,2003) - Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens will fully activate the County's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning (September 18, 2003) due to the expected severe weather related to Hurricane Isabel. "We need to take every step possible to ensure the safety of our employees and our citizens," Ms. Owens said. "Hopefully, we are erring on the side of caution, but our best information indicates the possibility for high winds, heavy rains, and strong storm surges tomorrow afternoon. I want our citizens to know that we are prepared to respond, monitor, protect and mitigate emergency situations as they occur." At this time, a liberal-leave policy is in effect for Thursday. Liberal-leave allows for unscheduled leave without prior approval. The EOC will be fully staffed to coordinate the County's response efforts to any emergency situation caused by severe weather. Non-life threatening emergencies should be directed at (410) 222-8040. Anne Arundel County, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will open four shelters throughout the County for residents who live in storm surge areas or areas that are subject to inland flooding. The shelters are scheduled to open at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2003. The Red Cross asks citizens seeking shelter to bring with them any medication needed, a change of clothes, pillows and blankets and basic toiletries. The four shelters are: - Meade High School
