Anne Arundel County Election Director To Serve Two-Year Term

ANNAPOLIS (June 19, 2003) - Anne Arundel County Election Director, Barbara Fisher, was recently elected Vice President of the Maryland Association of Election Officials (MAEO). The MAEO represents election boards of the state, counties and City of Baltimore.

"It is nice to know that others, outside of Anne Arundel County, recognize the dedication and leadership of Barbara Fisher," said County Executive Janet S. Owens. "She will be an outstanding asset to the Association."

Ms. Fisher, along with the President, Treasurer, Secretary and five Directors will make up the MAEO Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for transacting business during the year when it is not feasible to call the entire Association together.

Ms. Fisher began her career in elections as a temporary employee with the State Board of Elections in 1975. In 1977, she was hired permanently and during her twelve years at the State Board increased her responsibilities from Office Clerk to Administrative Aide. She accepted the position of Deputy Director for the Anne Arundel County Board of Elections in 1987 and was selected as the Election Director in 1997.

Ms. Fisher served actively on the MAEO Legislative Committee for the past twelve years. She has also served on the committee to study Polling Place Accessibility for the Disabled Voter and the Provisional Ballot Committee. She is currently chairman of the Legislative Committee and chairman of the Personnel Committee. In 1999, she received the "Director of the Year" award.
