Public Housing Communities Will Receive $5.1 Million in Renovations

Annapolis (November 18, 2003) - Anne Arundel County's Housing Authority will utilize $5.1 million from the sale of state bonds to improve public housing conditions in several County communities.  Five Maryland public housing agencies, including Anne Arundel County's Housing Authority, combined resources with the State to borrow against future federal funding.

"We need to thank Governor Ehrlich, Secretary Hoskins and all of the staff that helped make this much needed money come available," said County Executive Janet S. Owens.  Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. and Housing and Community Development Secretary Victor L. Hoskins announced the new capital fund initiative yesterday.

"The money will enable our Housing Authority to work quickly to make repairs and renovations to more than 1,100 homes.  This initiative will greatly improve the quality of life in Anne Arundel County," Ms. Owens continued.

The primary focus for the use of the funding will be major renovation projects within the Pinewood Village, Glen Square and Meade Village communities.  Work will include bathroom and kitchen remodeling.  Other significant improvements will include window replacement at Meade Village and Freetown Village.  Siding and roof replacements will take place within other communities.  Common area upgrades will also be done to refurbish hallways and community rooms at some of the remaining communities for the elderly.

The work is expected begin in the spring of 2004.  The Housing Authority will be responsible, over the next 20 years, for the debt service of the bond sale.
