Education Assistance Program

There are two (2) education assistance programs available to Fire Department personnel currently enrolled or considering pursuing a college degree.  

Anne Arundel County Employee Educational Assistance Program

This program is only available to full time Anne Arundel County employees.  The program is authorized under Article 8, Title 1-306 of the County Code and specific procedures and guidelines are available in Section E-2 of the Employee Relations Manual.

Under this program, employees taking college courses in the pursuit of a degree can obtain partial (65%) tuition

reimbursement. Reimbursement for Fire Department employees is limited to $800 per fiscal year. For a college course to be reimbursable, the college must be an accredited by either the U. S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. This applies to both campus based courses and online (Internet) courses.

State of Maryland Firefighter, Ambulance and Rescue Squad Member Tuition Reimbursement Program

In this program employees are eligible to receive the actual dollar amount of tuition expense paid. Applicants must receive at least a grade of "C" or better in any course specifically required for program completion.  The amount of the award may not exceed the equivalent annual tuition of a resident undergraduate student at the four-year public institution within the University System of Maryland, other than the University of Maryland University College and University of Maryland, Baltimore, with the highest annual expense for a full-time resident undergraduate.  Room and board and mandatory or optional fees are not reimbursed.  Funds may not be available to award all eligible students.

Eligibility requirements for this program include:

  1. Must be a Maryland resident
  2. Must be an active career or volunteer firefighter, ambulance or rescue squad member.
  3. Must serve a Maryland community while you take college courses and continue to serve for another year after you complete the courses. 
  4. Must attend a Maryland institution and enroll in a degree or certificate program in either fire service technology or emergency medical technology
