Q: Can I report information on a suspicious fire and remain anonymous?
A: Yes, you can report information directly to our office (410-222-7884) or by recording a message on the TIPs Line at 410-222-TIPS (8477)

Q: What kind of calls do Fire Investigators respond on?
A: We respond to dwelling, building or vehicle fires where the cause of the fire is suspicious or unknown to the Incident Commander. We also respond to any fires or explosions involving serious injury or death. Investigators respond to Post Blast Incidents and calls for Suspicious Packages.

Q: Why do Fire Investigators wear weapons?
A: Fire Investigators have the same general police powers, including arrest powers, as sworn members of the County Police Department for the express purpose of enforcing any fire safety laws in effect in this County.

Q: What kind of training do our Fire Investigators receive?
A: The Fire Investigator starts with years of fire fighting experience to understand fire behavior and fire scene appreciation. The investigator then attends the resident course in Arson and Explosives Investigation at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md. The next step is satisfactory completion of the A.A.Co. Police Academy or an equivalent course standard according to the Maryland Police Training Commission. Additional specialized training is a continual process thru various seminars and In-service training requirements from both fire and police agencies.

Q: What should I do if I know a child who is playing with fire?
A: Contact our Public Education coordinator at (410) 222-8200 during normal business hours.

Q: How do I get a copy of a fire report?
A: Requests for reports may be made by contacting the Office of the Fire Marshal, (410) 222-7884 or the Records section at Fire Department headquarters, (410) 222-8307. The requested information will be reviewed and the appropriate information released. The normal fee for this report is $5.00.

Q: How do I report an over-crowding situation or other Fire Code violation?
A: During normal business hours you can contact this office at (410) 222-7884 and report the information directly to a Code Enforcement Inspector. If the occurrence is after hours or you are unable to contact the Fire Marshal's Office, contact 911 and report the hazard to the Dispatch Center.
