History of the Emergency Medical Services Division

The Emergency Medical Services Division of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department has a long tradition of providing quality emergency care to our citizens and visitors. In 1974, the Department began the transition into the Paramedic age. That year, two Advanced Life Support (ALS) units were established in Glen Burnie and Linthicum.

Today, that system has evolved into a career system of twenty-one Advanced Life Support Paramedic Companies serving a residential population of approximately one-half million and running in excess of 50,000 calls per year.

Medic Locations in AACo

The Department's twenty-one paramedic units are strategically located throughout the County. Licensed paramedics certified at both National and State levels staff each Paramedic Unit.

Fire suppression resources within the Department  supplement the County paramedic units. Trained and certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) staff each engine, ambulance, and ladder truck in the County. These firefighter EMTs can provide basic life support independent from the Paramedic Units as well as provide support in joint responses.
