Tree and Stump Removal

Anne Arundel County is authorized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to remove dead trees on County-maintained  roadside property.  In addition to tree removal, the tree stump may also be removed depending on the location of the stump and whether the stump is determined to be a safety hazard or a detriment to County infrastructure.  Normally, tree stumps are removed in communities within 90 days following tree removal. In order to meet the demand for tree and stump removal, County forces are supplemented with contract labor.

Trees that fall into a County-maintained roadway will be moved from the traveled portion by County forces as quickly as possible. The tree debris will be placed on the public or private property from which the tree originated. In the case of private property, the homeowner is responsible for disposal of the debris.

Tree debris removal following a storm event is handled in a variety of ways depending on whether the debris is within the County-maintained road right-of-way or whether the debris is on privately owned property. Please visit our Storm Debris webpage for complete information regarding these services.

Requests for removal of trees in the County-maintained right-of-way that are not hazardous require an inspection by a Licensed Tree Expert and possibly a permit from State Forestry.  If a permit is needed, it is the responsibility of the adjacent homeowner to apply for and receive a permit, at which time the County will schedule removal of the tree. To apply for a permit, please visit the Maryand DNR Forest Service  Permit application website. Permit applications for Anne Arundel County  should be mailed to Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service, 8023 Long Hill Road, Pasadena, MD 21122.

Anne Arundel County does not have a tree replacement program.  Should communities wish to plant or replace street trees that have been removed, they should contact the Department of Natural Resources to obtain a Maryland DNR Forest Service Permit to plant trees and to obtain a copy of the approved planting list.

To request tree removal along County-maintained rights-of-way, please contact the appropriate road district. Road districts are open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday  through Friday.  A supervisor will investigate your concern and respond to you within one week (one day if it is a hazard) to advise you of a schedule for any needed work.
