Traffic Signs

Traffic signs are used along County-maintained roadways to provide regulations, warnings, and guidance to motorists.    All signs must be designed and installed in compliance with the Maryland Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

The Traffic Engineering Division designs, installs, and maintains signs using its own forces.  We maintain over 70,000 traffic signs, which are inspected via a programmed frequency.  However, by partnering with our citizens who report damaged signs, we can provide an even higher level of service.   Information about requesting sign repair is described in detail in the last paragraph.

The Traffic Engineering Division also installs new signs to control the flow of traffic as needed.  To request installation of a new sign or modification (not repair) to an existing sign, please contact the Traffic Engineering Division at 410-222-7331 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  An initial investigation of your request will take place within one week, with a decision usually being reached within three weeks.  The actual installation of new or modified signs is dependent upon weather and work schedules.

To request repair or replacement of existing signs, please contact our Traffic Maintenance Shop.  Emergency repairs of STOP, YIELD, ONE-WAY, and DO NOT ENTER signs can be requested by calling 410-222-1940 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and by calling 410-222-8400 at all other times.  A crew will respond within two hours.

To submit a request for all other sign repairs, please call 410-222-1940 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Please provide as much specific information as possible; i.e., the type of sign, its location, its condition (damaged or missing), and whether it is a hazard to vehicles or pedestrians.   Non-emergency repairs will be handled as workload and weather permits, usually within 10 days.
