The road shoulder is the reserved area alongside the roadway to be used in the event of an emergency or breakdown. Not all County roads have shoulders, but where present, road shoulders along collector or community streets are normally unpaved. Road shoulders are not traveling lanes, and motorists should not use them as such. The Road Operations Districts maintain over 1,600 miles of road shoulders. This maintenance activity consists of reshaping continuous sections of road shoulder using a grader or a truck-mounted material conveyor to restore the shoulder to its original condition. This same activity is used for shoulder restoration following resurfacing projects.
To request road shoulder repair or restoration, please contact the appropriate road district. Road districts are open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A supervisor will investigate your concern and respond to you within one week (one day if it is a hazard) to advise you of a schedule for any needed work. |
