This is one of seven Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) projects that the County is pursuing in compliance with the State’s Bay Restoration Program. When complete, nitrogen concentrate levels will be reduced from 8mg/L to 3 mg/L and phosphorus from 2 m/L to 0.3 mg/L.
The current Virginia Initiative Treatment Process at the plant was based on past nutrient removal goals. The new design uses a step-feed process followed by denitrification filters. Existing reactors will be modified to introduce wastewater into several different locations within the reactors and to improve reliability during maintenance shutdowns. A new intermediate pumping station will convey flow to new denitrification filters to optimize nitrogen/phosphorus removal.
